JeongNam I Je Hwang Byong Ki Ryu Gayageum Sanjo (Hwang Byong Ki style Gayageum Sanjo)/Chimhyangmu(12.1¢¦4)
Hwang Byong Ki never stayed in repeating the classic and took steps forward to developing his own artistic style throughout his life. In this performance, he is going to play the entire piece of Gayageum Sanjo created by his teacher, Jeong Nam-Hee, with his own color added, which will be the first chance for general public to listen.
Alternative energy, alternative medicine and alternative food.. recently we are getting closer to the word, 'alternative'. We are living in a world where it is possible and easy to change something in need to another. However, if we give a thought for a second, there exist a lot of things that cannot be altered - nature, life, culture and art.
I came to know about the Korean traditional music through the music of Hwang Byeong-Ki. Strictly speaking, I am not so sure whether to call his music as 'Korean traditional music' or not. When I first listened to his playing, I did not even notice that it was a Gayageum. I had no idea of whether that kind of music can belong to the category of Korean traditional music. I was literally 'captivated' by that 'strange' object for no reason.
In the filed of Korean traditional music, surveys were conducted from time to time to find out the preference of general public over the Korean traditional music. The music of Hwang Byong-Ki always takes the top. In the writing of an expert to classify the western music in Korea, or in the survey to select the best ten in the creative composition piece after the liberation from Japanese colonial rule, Hwang Byong-Ki can be always found. No single music piece was picked for Korean traditional music except for the works of Hwang.
As described above, Hwang Byong-Ki is one of the Korean creative musicians who can never be substituted. However, I was one of the most surprised when Hwang appeared with the music of 'Sanjo'. That 'Sanjo' is well-known for its unique composition - taking roots from the melody of Jung Nam-Hee and adding his own musical skills and talents to it. It did not sound familiar or even strange to my ear, but started to deeply penetrate into the hearts of many people. His Sanjo is not an alternative to other Sanjo pieces. However, Gayageum Sanjo of Hwang Byong-Ki has definitely extraordinary attractiveness. (Yoon Jung Kang, music critic)
