1. Purpose
Cultural Event Representing Korean Traditional Culture, SamcheongGak¡¯s Fourth Season Performance; The Tales from the Boudoir
SamcheongGak was reopened on October 29th, 2001 as a traditional culture experience center for the appreciation of Korean art. SamcheongGak¡¯s fourth season performance for the first half of 2003, ¡°The Tales from the Boudoir¡±, is a recreation of an early essay, Kyujungchilujaengrongi. Regular performances on the Ilwhadang stage provide a hands on experience of Korean art to foreign tourists. The new production, ¡°The Tales from the Boudoir¡±, is a satirical comedy of the changing times, and introduces the culture of Korean women through Korean sound and motion to foreigners and the general public.
Original Musical of the Korean People and by the Korean People, ¡°The Tales from the Boudoir¡±¡¦ Setting New Horizons in Traditional Art.
The original essay, Kyujungchilujaengrongi, is believed to have been written in the late Chosun Dynasty by an anonymous matron of a reputable household. Renown as the finest essay in women¡¯s literature, Kyujungchilujaengrongi has strong feministic characteristics based on women¡¯s identity and sociality.
¡°The Tales from the Boudoir¡± to be performed on SamcheongGak¡¯s Ilwhadang Stage, is a never before attempted recreation of Kyujungchilugaengrongi in musical format.
Perfection of literary art is pursued at SamcheongGak by bringing to the stage historically acclaimed pieces. Also, efforts are being made to guarantee SamcheongGak¡¯s position as a professional performing arts center by securing various repertoire.
2. Features
Recreation of the Characters of Bongsan Mask Dance
The characters of Bongsan Mask Dance, Miyalhalmi, Yangban, Malttugi, and Chwibari, are born again as the seven tools of needlework.
Furthermore, the performance vitality and expression elements of puppet shows and tutelary deity mask rituals will be greatly adopted.
Harmonious Live Performance of Joyful Folk Songs and Various Traditional Instruments
A new type of Korean classical music is born based on folk songs of the joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure of the Korean people.
Modern instruments and traditional instruments such as gayageum (twelve string harp), geomungo (six string harp), ajaeng (seven string fiddle), haegeum (fiddle), daegeum (clarinet type instrument), piri (pipe), drums, and keyboards are played together to create a live sensation.
Production of Surreal Character Products Full of Dramatic Intensity
Character products made by traditional crafting methods using cloth, hanji (Korean paper), and wood are sure to bring back the drama of the stage.
Particularly, character products are the perfect souvenir for foreigners who wish to take home a lasting impression of Korea.
New Plot Structure and Strengthening of Stage Aesthetics
The flat structure of the original essay was reconstructed into a picture frame plot format where reality and fantasy co-exist.
Elements of traditional plays and storytelling were adopted through the introduction of the traditional performance principle of ¡°closing and opening.¡±
